Automotive History

Corvette

Is Automotive History just about cars? I don’t think so.

Quite often we forget or never knew how a technology was created or what lead to its discovery in this article about automotive history, a window is open to the past on the early stages of the factory robot.

Not all things are created equal.  Nor does everyone have the same vision. From an early age one individual had the fascination of electrical components and machinery, his name was George Devol. George was an inventor, a self-taught individual that from early in his youth tinkered with electronics and mechanical engineering. George never had a formal college education however, his yearning for knowledge and a series of jobs in electronics thrusted his desire to become more knowledgeable in automated systems.

In the early 1950′s George developed a working prototype of an automated arm that could perform assembly type tasks. George along with Joseph F. Engelberger developed a partnership in 1954 that led to the universal automation Unimation Company. In 1964 Devol received his first patent for a robotic arm. George was also a team member who developed the first commercial use of a microwave oven.

Other technologies that George was involved in included magnetic recording systems that were purposed for controlling machinery along with a digital playback device. In around early 1950′s Devol licensed a digital magnetic recording device to Remington Rand and later became manager of their magnetics department. It was at this point along with the team George developed magnetic recording systems that apply to business data applications. Unfortunately at the time, the magnetic recording system was too slow for business data and the technology was repurposed for controlling a machine that eventually became the system that operated a robot.

Without adequate personal financial resources to develop this technology George searched for a company that had the financial ability to further develop his dream. Like many entrepreneurs, George had many conversations with several different major corporations in the US and through a family connection was introduced to Manning, Maxwell and Moore. The chief of engineering at Manning, Maxwell and Moore was Joseph F. Engelberger who ran the aircraft products division. Mr. Engelberger was very excited about this new technology and Devol agreed to license this technology to Manning Maxwell and Moore. About the same time Manning, Maxwell and Moore were acquired by Dresser Industries, Dresser at the time didn’t see the need for an aircraft division and its industrial robot technology and patent license. Subsequently, Engelberger searched for a partner to buyout the aircraft division and found one in Consolidated Diesel Electronics. Consolidated agreed to finance and continue the development on the robot, this new division was called Unimation Incorporated. This was the true beginning and the entrepreneurial effort along with corporate financing to develop what is today one of the most common pieces of equipment in any automated factory.

Robots today do many common and dangerous tasks such as handling of diecast metals, welding, painting, delivering of parts to assembly stations. Many of the day-to-day tasks robots handle are much too dangerous for humans due to the potential hazard nature.

In August of 2011 George Devol passed on at the age of 99, he will be remembered in automotive history for decades to come. George Devol was an American inventor, an entrepreneur, a self educated individual that sought the help of others to bring about a new American technology. In May of 2011 George Devol was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame.

Today two other young entrepreneurs are doing the same in the Internet technology arena. 1956 Ford Sunliner

by Brad The Classic Car Guy on March 1, 2011

This year the winner is a 1956 Ford.

Yes, a 1956 Ford wins the Ridler award. The Ridler award is equivalent to winning an Oscar in the custom car industry. This is huge. The Don Ridler Memorial Award is one if not the most prized award for a car designer, builder or owner. Most of the time the Ridler goes to a early car something in the 30′s erra but, this year the trophy goes to a very beautiful 1956 Ford Sunliner named Suncammer created by Steve Cook Creations.

The 1956 Ford is close to my heart.

It was the first car I got to drive at the early age of four. You see, I used to walk down the block in a semi-rural community in Pennsylvania and wait for my dad to drive around the corner. He would stop, pick me up and put me on his lap and let me steer the car, a very fond memory. As I recall it was a three-speed on the column and dad would say shift, and up to second gear the black handle would go. Quite often the hot-rodder that he was, he would like to spin the wheels and tell me not to tell mom he was burning rubber, well it was more like a little chirp then wheels spinning and bun-outs we see today. Oh yes that is me on the far right.

So, congratulations to Steve and the owners Bruce and Judy Ricks…you have a beautiful car.  1956 Ford Sunliner.

January 24, 2011

Where is the future of classic cars going? This past weekend at the 40th year Barrett-Jackson Collector Car auction, it became evident that the collector car marketplace is very strong.  Not only were classic cars being auctioned off at a rapid pace but other cars such as Resto rods, custom cars, roadsters, hot rods, exotic [...]
